Plumber Apprenticeship

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a plumber (general). The plumber installs, maintains, tests and repairs hot and cold water supply systems, drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems.
This qualification can take up to 36 months to complete.
  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • Grade 9 - English, Afrikaans, Maths, or science and 2 other subjects or a four subject National Technical Certificate N1
  • To qualify as a designated tradesman, an apprentice must pass an approved trade test
  • To be admitted to a trade test, an apprentice must:
    • Have attained a National Technical Certificate N2 in the relevant trade with a pass in trade theory or any one of the following:
      • Technical trade theory programmes quality assured by a SETA deemed to be equivalent to NQF level 3;
      • Relevant Engineering NCV Certificate with seven subjects at NQF level 3;
      • Technical Grade 11 with Maths, Science, Language and related trade theory Subject;
      • Relevant (directly related to the trade theory subjects) N6 certificate or National Technical Diploma (T, S or N stream)
    • Have gained experience and received practical training as follows:
      • Practical institutional training at an accredited training institution until he/she has met the Training Performance Criteria (TPC) in all the tasks (modules) as specified in the skills register for that trade
      • Practical experience at an accredited institution (training centre) until he/she has met with the Production Performance Criteria (PPC) in all the tasks (modules) as specified in the skills register mentioned in (i) above
      • 18 months' practical site / workplace experience with the employer

  • Month 11 - PPC Assessments & Pre-Trade Assessment Test
  • Month 12 - Training Centre Shut Down
Year 3
  • Month 1-4 - Workplace & Remediation
  • Month 5-6 - Trade Test Preparation
  • Month 7-12 - Trade Test
